Patent on new transfer paper opens up new markets

Neenah Coldenhove was established in 1661 as a paper factory. Still today, the company is known for its innovative paper solutions. As such, the company is a leading supplier of high-tech digital (sublimation) transfer papier. Additionally, Neenah Coldenhove is shaking up the traditional screen-printing market with its unique product Texcol®. V.O. took care of the patent application for this new type of paper and the registration of the brand name.

Coldenhove has been supplying large-scale industrial consumers for many years. Not only have they been producing the well-known blue envelopes for the Tax Authority in the Netherlands for years, Coldenhove has recently enjoyed great success with its Jetcol® sublimation transfer paper. This paper is perfect for printing on sportswear, but also home textiles and signage, such as flags.

Sublimation and transferring

“A printer prints the design onto the transfer paper using sublimation ink. A heat press then presses the design on the textile at 190º Celsius. The heat of the press ensures the design is released (sublimation) from the paper and transferred to the textile that is being printed (the substrate),” says Reshma Bhansing, product manager at Neenah Coldenhove.

‘A single point for all our patents, brands and legal issues is a very efficient way of doing things.’

The best alternative for screen printing

“The fabric being printed must consist of at least 65% polyester to use the Jetcol paper.” So that they could also print textiles from natural fibers, the company searched for a new application. Bhansing: “Until now, the traditional screen-printing method with pigment ink was used for this purpose.”

The Texcol paper is unique due to the fact that the coatings ensure the design stays colorfast on the materials. “Another big advantage is that there is no need to treat the textile before and after printing. That saves costs and is better for the environment.”

Full-service agency

V.O. has been assisting the company with patent applications, registering brand names and additional legal services for years. Bhansing: “They know our company through and through by now. V.O. regularly lends a hand when we are drawing up contracts or terms of sale, too.”

Aware of the value of intellectual property

“New ideas are first presented in our Innovation Board. Especially because there are many copycats in the paper market. We immediately assess whether the idea requires protection,” says Bhansing. Henri van Kalkeren, patent attorney at V.O. is proud to work for Neenah Coldenhove. “The paper business is old but what they are doing is absolutely innovative. They are aware of the value of their intellectual property. As a result, we are always informed of new developments within the company at an early stage. This allows us to take quick decisions and always stay one step ahead of the market.”
